Happy 75th birthday,
Trammell S. Crow
Trammell,
the day we met in the spring of 2022, I found a friend who believed what I believe: that people working together can do more than any of us alone. Every tree, reef and garden we plant in your name is proof, and it will keep growing long after us.
Thank you, and happy birthday.

A letter to Trammell’s family and friends around the world
Dear family and friends of Trammell,
Today Trammell turns 75, and from reefs in the Pacific to rainforests in Panama and the boreal north of Finland, people he has never met are saying thank you.
In 2011 he started Earth Day Dallas with a simple idea: give the people doing the work a place to be heard. About 48,000 people came that first year. By 2019 more than 177,000 came to Fair Park. Every April since, a prime minister, ambassadors, U.S. senators, members of Congress, company presidents and CEOs have shared the EarthX stage with scientists, students, Rotarians, farmers, fishers and founders of small projects that no one had heard of yet. Many of those projects found their first partners in Dallas. Some of them are now changing whole coastlines.
That is Trammell’s gift. He did not only protect land and water himself. He made room for thousands of others to do the same, and he treated a student with a new idea with the same respect as a minister with a budget.
So today, 75 project websites around the world carry a dedication to him, each one in its own words. And we are making a promise to go with them.
So here is our birthday gift to Trammell: a gift that will keep growing. Starting today, we are launching programs around the world in his honor, from coral reefs under the sea to trees, pollinators and the return of the Great Green Macaw. A forest already carries his name in Rovaniemi, Finland. At Dolphin Bay in Panama, his Rare Tree Forest is helping bring back the critically endangered Great Green Macaw, and a Rotary Reef in his name is already teeming with sea life. Next come a forest for the monarch butterflies in Mexico and pollinator gardens along the flyway that the monarchs follow from Canada through the United States to Mexico. Each program will be built with local Rotary clubs and the communities around them, and each new reef, tree, garden and nest will keep adding to his birthday gift long after today.
For me, this began on April 25, 2022, the day I first met Trammell, in his backyard on Turtle Creek just after Earth Day. Every reef, forest and garden on this page has grown from that day, and I have spent every year since working to say thank you in a way that lasts.
To his family: thank you for sharing him with the world. To his friends: thank you for standing beside him. And to Trammell: happy birthday, and thank you for a stage where the people doing the work are heard.
With gratitude,
Steve Bender

For his 75th birthday, 75 project websites each carry a dedication to Trammell S. Crow, and this website is one of them. Together they show what his stage helped start, dedicated in his name from Finland to Panama and around the world:
Is your club or community restoring a reef, planting trees, growing a pollinator garden or protecting wildlife? Share it and get your own 4-7-8-17 Report Card. One project is featured every day until EarthX.
A forest in his name
To celebrate his 75th birthday, a new forest in Finland has been dedicated to Trammell S. Crow. It will be registered in the Finnish Real Estate Register under his name and protected for at least 70 years, certified under ISO 14064-2 by Kiwa Inspecta.
“What better way to celebrate 75 years of an extraordinary life and environmental leadership than by creating something that will benefit the planet for generations to come? This is no mere symbolic gesture: we are creating an actual forest that sequesters carbon dioxide.”
Salomo Vilén, CEO, and Marko Kärkkäinen, CGO, Carboreal

In Panama: a forest and a Rotary Reef in his name
At Dolphin Bay in Bocas del Toro, Panama, the Trammell S. Crow Rare Tree Forest was dedicated on August 6, 2026, alongside the return of the critically endangered Great Green Macaw. Just offshore, a Rotary Reef carries his name too, its Rotary wheels already teeming with fish, sponges, sharks and lobsters.

Two paths, one stage: better than the sum of the parts
Trammell S. Crow has spent his life bringing people together. This is the story of what happened when two people who had each spent years doing that on their own finally met.
Trammell’s path
In 2011, Trammell started Earth Day Dallas with a belief that the environment belongs to everyone. About 48,000 people came that first year. He kept building, and Earth Day Dallas became EarthX, one of the largest environmental gatherings in the world, with more than 177,000 people at Fair Park in 2019. He gave its stage to a prime minister and ambassadors, senators and members of Congress, company presidents and CEOs, scientists and students, ranchers and Rotarians, and he pledged to protect 250,000 acres of forest in Suriname. In 2019 he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Through all of it, his real gift was the room he made for others.
Steve’s path
Steve Bender was building in a different way: one project, one club and one community at a time. With the Rotary Club of Newport Beach he helped send a medical box to an AIDS clinic in Nkandla, South Africa, and then the first Smiles in a Box dental clinic, which grew into dental and oral health clinics for children in Mexico and beyond. He helped students form an Interact club after their very first project, and in 2016 he founded Building Bridges through Rotary to connect clubs on both sides of the border. Then came Rotary Reefs in Panama, the 100 Projects in 100 Countries program and the 4-7-8-17 framework, all with the same idea: projects that are true, fair and built to last.
Where the paths met
On April 25, 2022, three days after Earth Day, they met in Trammell’s backyard on Turtle Creek in Highland Park, Dallas: the man who had built the stage and the Rotarian who had the projects. Trammell had the room. Steve had the people ready to fill it.
A year later, Steve brought Rotary to Trammell’s stage. On Friday, April 21, 2023, the first Rotary conference at EarthX filled the Blue Speaker Stage at Fair Park for three days: reefs, water, plastics, the Great Green Macaw, Ukraine and Rotary clubs from across Texas. At 2:40 that afternoon, Steve spoke about the Rotary Reef Project, and by evening Rotary was handing out its first Eco Contest awards on the same stage. Over the years, Steve has personally brought Past Presidents of Rotary International and former ambassadors to the EarthX stage. In 2024, Trammell opened and closed the Partnerships for the Goals conference. By 2026, the Environmental Xperience filled eight stages with 165 sessions. Projects that had started in a Rotary club meeting were now being heard by ministers and funders from around the world, and EarthX had new stories to tell.

Better together
Neither could have done it alone. A stage without projects is just a room, and projects without a stage stay small. Together, they became something larger than either one: forests in Finland and Panama that carry Trammell’s name, a Rotary Reef growing coral in Bocas del Toro, the Great Green Macaw returning to the rainforest, and today, 75 project websites around the world saying thank you.
That is what Trammell has always shown the world: when people come together, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This friendship is one more proof of it.

Birthday cards for Rotary in Germany: 100 years of bridge builders
The first Rotary club in Germany was founded in Hamburg in 1927, and its jubilee year runs from October 7, 2026 to October 7, 2027. To celebrate, Rotarians of German heritage around the world are invited to send a birthday card to Germany: one project each, from their own families and their own clubs.

2027
Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Rotary Deutschland!
Happy 100th birthday to Rotary in Germany, the Brückenbauer, the bridge builders.
My grandfather, Conrad Bender, crossed the ocean from Germany on a steamship. Three generations later, his grandson created the Rotary Reef program, building reefs in the shape of the Rotary wheel in Panama, and placed second in the “Fix the Planet” contest sponsored by Holger Knaack, the first German President of Rotary International.
This reef is my family’s gift to Germany.
